- May 10 – Mind Eraser opens at Six Flags Worlds of Adventure.
- May 10 – The Joker's Revenge opens at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
- May 30 – A part-time Six Flags Magic Mountain employee is killed while crossing the tracks of the Revolution roller coaster. She was struck by a train full of park visitors as it returned to the station; both passengers and those waiting in line for the ride saw the victim fly into an area beneath the coaster, and she was pronounced dead at the scene from major injuries.

- June 3 – Skull Mountain opens at Six Flags Great Adventure.

- October 4 – Fright Fest 1996 begins at Six Flags Great Adventure.
- October 11 – Fright Fest 1996 begins at Six Flags St. Louis.
- October 18 – Fright Fest 1996 begins at Six Flags Magic Mountain.
- October 29 – Fright Fest 1996 ends at Six Flags St. Louis.

- June - Premier Parks becomes a public company by raising nearly $70 million through an initial offering at $18 per share.
- August 27 - Premier Parks announced that they will acquire The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom for an undisclosed amount, with the deal to close at the end of December.
- September 25 - Premier Parks purchases Elitch Gardens.
- October 25 - Premier Parks purchases from FRE Inc. Paradise Island Family Fun Park in Sacramento and the Waterworld USA water park chain, consisting of two water parks in Conford and Sacramento in California.
- December - Premier Parks purchases Riverside Park.
