Aquaman: Power Wave is a water coaster at Six Flags Over Texas. It is the park's 14th roller coaster, and the first ever to be based on Aquaman. It is one of several new for 2020 rides that have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in March. It was originally delayed until 2021, then again until 2022, and then once again until 2023. It finally opened to the public March 11, 2023.

History[]

In July 2019, construction walls were set up along the perimeter of the site of Aquaman Splashdown as it was being demolished. On the wall, four different retro banners were placed, each of which contained a figure of Six Flags Over Texas' history holding up a sign that reads "Pardon Our Mess!". One featured Cyrus Cosmo, the park's former "inventor" of attractions, as well as one featuring the Speelunkers, another featuring Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, and the last featured Angus Wynne, the founder of Six Flags.[1]

Less than a week later, SFOT Source reported that shipping records had been uncovered that stated Mack Rides, a popular amusement ride manufacturer, would be shipping one of their "Power Splash" rides to Six Flags Over Texas in 2020.[2]

In July 2020, the opening date of the ride was pushed back to 2021 due to the closure of the park due to COVID-19 in early 2020. In December 2020, this date was pushed back again to 2022 due to the company's financial issues and modifications made to the ride. These modifications included the addition of a turntable, a second train, and an indoor themed queue. However, the park later announced on July 6, 2022 that the ride would be delayed, once again, to Spring 2023.

Pass holders were given exclusive ride previews during soft opening dates on February 25 to 26, and March 4 to 5, with priority given to Diamond / Ultimate passes, and then Platinum / Extreme passes. The grand opening of the ride was held for the general public on March 11, 2023.

Free pass-through lockers were added to the ride in early April 2023 and began use soon after. Before reaching the lockers, guests are provided with paper slips containing barcodes. Each slip gives riders access to a designated locker and must be kept during the ride in order to retrieve their items afterward. Late in 2023 (while the ride was closed for the season), walls were added to the operator booth. Allegedly, this was due to technical issues when the ride first opened as the park didn’t purchase an outdoor-rated panel.

Experience[]

Queue[]

Guests first pass underneath the entrance archway. The left lane has the normal entrance and the right lane has The Flash Pass and single rider entrances. The normal line features multiple switchbacks underneath shaded area, as well as signs depicting Aquaman and his abilities. The line emerges with the other lane and bring guests to the locker area. Guests are allowed time to store all of their items before entering the station lines directly across from the lockers. Currently, guests can't choose seats and are instead informed which row to enter. This has been attributed to high demand.

Layout[]

After riders are loaded, the turntable rotates and the vehicle lines up with the track. Once the track is locked in place, the vehicle accelerates backward over a small hill before traveling through a straight section of track. This straight section of track goes through the ride's splashdown pool. The water in the pool is low enough at this point in the ride that the vehicle can travel over it. The car continues part of the way up a vertical spike before losing momentum and reversing direction. It then travels forward over the pool and launches forward into a second vertical spike then comes back down the spike before entering a third backward launch. While the car is on the vertical spike at the back end of the ride's layout, water flows from the side reservoirs into the splashdown pool, raising the level in about six seconds. The car then travels down the spike and enters the splashdown pool which is now high enough to interact with the boat. This serves to slow the car down before the end of the ride to unload riders.
