Big Dipper was a historic wooden coaster that operated in Six Flags Worlds of Adventure in Aurora, Ohio from 1925 to 2007, when the park would close altogether.

History[]

In 1925, Geauga Lake would enter an expansion, in which a new wooden coaster, Sky Rocket would be added. It was considered one of the largest at the time of its opening, at a height of 65 feet and a track length of 2,680 feet.

Sometime in the 1940's, the ride would be renamed Clipper before being named Big Dipper in 1969 when Funtime Incorporated took ownership of the park. The ride would go under renovations in the 1980's included a retrack by Martin & Vleminckx.

Big Dipper would continue to operate during the Six Flags era, before closing on September 16, 2007 when the park would close entirely. During this time, the coaster was the oldest in Ohio, and the seventh oldest in the United States. Many coaster enthusiasts, preservationists and local residents of Aurora were concerned with the coasters fate.

Demolition

The coaster was listed on eBay in 2010 with bidding starting at $9,500, however it didn't receive a single bid. Members from the project "Save the Big Dipper" were originally going to buy the coaster, however the deal fell through in early 2011 due to various legal issues surrounding the sale[1]. With the coaster SBNO for nearly ten years, along with no buyers and constant trespassers on the property, Cedar Fair planned to demolish the coaster[2]. A county trustee confirmed the demolition was happening, and the coaster was demolished on October 17, 2016.
