Boardwalk is a large carnival-themed area at Six Flags Great Adventure. It opened in 1982 as Goodtime Alley, replacing the former Fortune Festival area. In 1995, it received a massive makeover to become the Boardwalk.[1]
After Fortune Festival was destroyed in a fire in December of 1981, plans came together to introduce a new and improved games area for the 1982 season. The new Goodtime Alley offered a great improvement over the original, with an eye towards future expansion. Unlike the original which was a dead-end, the top end was left open for additional attractions. To help draw crowds into the area, new rides would be added.
The first of these new rides was Joust-A-Bout, added for the 1982 season. Its height, motion, and colorful lights were a complement to the lights and sounds of the midway games.
