Bugs Bunny World is a children's area at Six Flags Magic Mountain, based on the Looney Tunes franchise. It opened in 1985, replacing the former Children's World area.
In 2014, Bugs Bunny World re-opened after an extensive refurbishment.
History[]
When Magic Mountain originally opened in 1971 under the Newhall Land and Farming Company, the Looney Tunes characters were the "mascots" of the park, a license given to them by Warner Bros., who had not yet established a relationship with Six Flags. They resided in the "Children's World" section of the park, and area with various attractions for kids.
For the 1972 season, the Looney Tunes characters were retired (likely due to licensing costs), and the park began using their own, original characters, the Wizard and his Trolls. To promote their new characters, Children's World was expanded with the addition of "Wizard's Village", containing a lot more activities for kids.
In 1979, Six Flags purchased Magic Mountain from Newhall, and the park was officially rebranded "Six Flags Magic Mountain" in 1980. Six Flags continued to use the original Magic Mountain characters until 1984, when they were permanently retired.
That same year, Six Flags acquired Marriott's Great America from the Marriott Corporation, and as part of a deal with Warner Bros. included with the acquisition, Six Flags was given the rights to use the Looney Tunes characters in their parks. Marriott had previously been in a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. to use the Looney Tunes characters at both of the Marriott's Great America parks in Gurnee, Illinois and Santa Clara, California.
Very soon after, Six Flags and Warner Bros. began developing new attractions for the parks, some of which would replace existing ones. One of these would be the replacement of Children's World at Six Flags Magic Mountain to an all-new Looney Tunes area for kids.
In 1985, Bugs Bunny World opened to the public.
1993 refurbishment[]
In 1993, Bugs Bunny World underwent its first major refurbishment. This saw the addition of the Animal Star Theatre and a new entrance to the land which featured the 140-foot tall "General Sam Tree", a replica of a Californian sequoia tree to top off the wilderness theme.[1]
1999 refurbishment[]
On May 27, 1999, Bugs Bunny World re-opened after an extensive makeover that saw the addition of the new Canyon Blaster roller coaster and the new 6,000-square-foot play facility, the Looney Tunes Lodge.[2]
2014 refurbishment[]
Between the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Bugs Bunny World underwent a third major refurbishment, the biggest yet. The "General Sam Tree" was removed in the preceding November after nearly 29 years, and replaced with a smaller, more modern entrance.[3][4] Many attractions received new paint and thematic elements, and a large amount of trees were removed. A grand opening for the updated area and a new "kiddie" roller coaster, Speedy Gonzales Hot Rod Racers, was held on June 25, 2014.[5]
