The Butterfield Stagecoach is a horse-drawn carriage ride located at the Ghost Town area of Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.
History[]
Since 1949, this family ride featured authentic stagecoaches pulled by well-trained teams of 4 horses. Three of the stagecoaches were actually used by the Butterfield Overland Mail service, which had previously operated from 1858 to 1861. One had been used for Ben Holladay's Overland Stage Route, which operated from 1861 until it was acquired by Wells Fargo Express in 1866. One stagecoach is a replica that was built for Knott's Berry Farm in 1954. Guests are advised not to worry about bullet holes in the door as they were from a long time ago.[1]
The route originally took guests to the relatively undeveloped north end of the park occupied by "bad men", then referred to as "Whiskey Flat" and now occupied by Fiesta Village.[1] The current route is dedicated solely for the horses and stagecoach, winding around the Fiesta Village and Camp Snoopy areas of the park and back to the station in Ghost Town.[2]
During the Knott's Scary Farm seasonal event, the ride has been re-themed for spooky tours.
