Carousel Plaza is the main hub area of Six Flags Great America. It opened with the park on May 29, 1976, as one of the park's six original areas. It features the Columbia Carousel and Sky Trek Tower, as well as Maxx Force, a launch coaster with the fastest launch in North America.
History[]
Carousel Plaza opened on May 29, 1976, as one of the original six areas of Marriott's Great America. At the time of opening, the only ride that was open was the Columbia Carousel.
In 1977, Sky Trek Tower opened, a 330 foot tall observation tower. To this day, it remains the tallest structure in the park and in Lake County, Illinois.
In 1979, the Pictorium opened, an IMAX theater.
In spring 2018, The Pictorium closed and was demolished to make way for a then-unannounced 2019 attraction. Its "sudden departure" was criticized by some, as the theater was seen as a pioneer of IMAX technology, especially in theme parks.[1]
On July 4, 2019, Maxx Force, an S&S roller-coaster opened, replacing The Pictorium IMAX theater.
