Chouteau's Market, originally known as France, is a French-themed area at Six Flags St. Louis. It originally opened in 1971, as one of the park's six original themed sections. In 1995, the area received a renovation, and its name was changed to its current one.

The area is named after Auguste Chouteau, the founder of the city of St. Louis, Missouri. Chouteau was a French immigrant, and built a French trading post east of the Mississippi River along with his partner, Pierre Laclède.

The area can be accessed through the 1904 World's Fair, Illinois, and Studio Backlot sections of the park.

History[]

The France section opened with the park on June 5, 1971, as one of the original "Six Flags over Mid-America" areas.

In August 2013, Tsunami Soaker was announced for the park's 2014 season. After the 2013 season, the former colonial-style building facades and the Hannibarrels were demolished to make way for the new ride. Like its predecessor, the ride is themed after barrels, but this time in a body of water near a "fishing market".

On September 1, 2016, Spinsanity was officially announced as part of Six Flags' 2017 attraction announcements. A custom "Mega Disk'O" ride by Zamperla, it was the first of it's kind to be built at any Six Flags park.[1] However, the "Spinsanity" name and logo had previously been used on another ride in Six Flags Fiesta Texas' Fiesta Bay Boardwalk earlier that year.

After the first annual Holiday in the Park signaled the end of a newly extended operating season, the old Warner Bros. movie studio facades at the corner of Studio Backlot near the train tracks were removed in the off-season, and construction on the new ride began. In the initial press release and in the 2017 park maps, the ride was listed as being part of Chouteau's Market, slightly rezoning the area to include the small area near Sound Stage #2. The ride opened on May 26, 2017. [2]

In 2019, Antique Photo Emporium was replaced with Ashley & Tintype Old Time Photos. The new store replaced the former Old West theme with a late 1800's theme, more closely fitting with the rest of the area.
