Cyclone was a wooden roller coaster in North End at Six Flags New England. It originally opened on June 25, 1983 as the "Riverside Cyclone", and was renamed Cyclone in 2000 when Riverside Amusement Park became Six Flags New England. The ride was designed by William Cobb & Associates and was built by Frontier Construction Company.

History[]

1983-1999: Riverside Park[]

In 1983, Riverside Amusement Park decided to build Riverside Cyclone, a new wooden roller coaster modeled after the famous Coney Island Cyclone. The ride was the second full-sized roller coaster to open at the park since it re-opened in 1940, following the opening of Thunderbolt in 1941. The $2.5 million Riverside Cyclone was designed by William Cobb & Associates and built by the Frontier Construction Company. The ride officially opened to the public on June 25, 1983, with William Cobb as well as Norm Howells from Frontier Construction in attendance for the opening ceremony.

2000-2014: Six Flags New England[]

With the transformation of Riverside Park to Six Flags New England in 2000, the Riverside Cyclone was renamed to simply "Cyclone".

In June 2014, Six Flags New England announced that Cyclone would close on July 20, with the park telling guests to get their last rides before it permanently closed. On July 20, 2014, Cyclone closed after 30 years of operation. On August 28, it was announced that Cyclone would be transformed by Rocky Mountain Construction into a wooden-steel hybrid roller coaster, Wicked Cyclone.[1]
