DC Super-Villains Swing or Super-Villains Swing (formerly Whirligig) is a flying swing ride at Six Flags Great America, located in DC Universe. It opened on May 29, 1976 in County Fair as an original ride of Great America.
This ride is themed to DC Comics super-villains, and is a "Waveswinger" model ride by Zierer. It shares its name with two other swing rides of the same model.
History[]
Whirligig (1976-2021)[]
On May 29, 1976, Whirligig opened in County Fair, across from Fiddler's Fling. The ride was only at Marriott's Great America's Gurnee park, and the Santa Clara park had never received one.
In 1985, around the time that Z-Force was built, the park moved Whirligig to Yankee Harbor, near Yankee Clipper. In 2001, near the time that Vertical Velocity was built, the ride was moved near Batman: The Ride. It replaced a "Gotham City" plaza that placed Batman's Batmobile in the middle. The Batmobile was moved to the right of Whirligig.
DC Super-Villains Swing (2022-present)[]
On March 24, 2022, the park announced DC Universe, a DC Comics themed-area which would replace Yankee Harbor. As one of the three re-imagined rides, Whirligig would become DC Super-Villains Swing, a super-villain themed swing ride. It would have a new sign post, a photo op feature in front of the ride and a higher pedestal for a renovated Batmobile.
The ride's structure was re-erected in early May, along with the exterior pieces. The ride was completed by late May, as the new sign was erected and Whirligig references disappeared. The ride re-opened on May 26, 2022. In June, the sign post was painted black.
In July, the photo-op feature of the villains were constructed near the ride.
Ride experience[]
The ride spins riders up as it whirls riders up into a 360 orbit for around 2 minutes before descending down.
Panels[]
The panels of DC Super-Villains Swing feature several different villains from DC Comics:
