Dr. Diabolical's Cliffhanger is a Dive Coaster manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard that opened on July 30, 2022 at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The ride replaced the Sundance Theatre and celebrates the park's 30th year anniversary. [1]

The ride is steampunk-themed and is based on Dr. Diabolical’s plan of keeping her creatures during Fright Fest eternal, hence the creation of the “Cliffhanger”.

The ride breaks records such as the steepest dive coaster in the world at 95 degrees. It is the first B&M roller-coaster built at a Six Flags park since X-Flight at Six Flags Great America, which was built in 2012, breaking a decade-long streak. The ride also became the first dive coaster to be built in the Six Flags chain.

History[]

SFFT 2022 Teaser

The June 12 teaser

On June 12, 2021, Fiesta Texas held a parade at the "Roller Coaster Rodeo" event which featured steampunk-themed characters, plus a blimp that has "2022" labeled on the blimp. Additionally, guests can dial a number to hear a cryptic message for clues about what the new ride is about. The number (which is no longer in use), 1-833-SEES-YOU (1-833-733-7968), is approximately one minute in length. [2]

More teasers appeared with the 2022 blimp, such as the blimp floating near the Leaning Tower of Pisa. [3] Furthermore, the top left of the logo of the attraction was posted on Jeffrey Siebert's social media accounts. [4] The last teaser was posted on July 27, 2021 at 8PM CST. It was captioned "Home! #SFFT2022" with the blimp floating above the Matterhorn mountain. [5]

On July 28, 2021, the ride was officially announced to the public as Dr. Diabolical's Cliffhanger, a dive coaster becoming the first B&M coaster in 10 years built in the Six Flags chain. With 2 inversions, a height of 150 feet, a 142 foot 95 degree drop, a maximum speed of 60 mph, plus a 270 degree zero-g-roll, and moments of airtime. [6]

Construction and opening[]

In late-August 2021, track for the ride started moving towards the park. On the track, a sticker on the side of the track said, "Follow me to Six Flags Fiesta Texas", as a way to promote the new attraction. [7] Additionally, Sundance Theatre was demolished and land-clearing began on the plot of land where the ride would be located. [8]

On January 18, 2022, the park announced that footers and supports had gone vertical. By the last week of January 2022, track pieces for break run/station had been completed. Construction for the lift hill started in the week of January 31. It reached full height on the week of February 14. Construction for the drop track started by that same week.

On March 8, 2022, the Immelmann was completed. 3 days later, the zero-g roll was completed as well. On the 22nd, the mid-course break run and drop was completed and the wild-banked turn following 3 days later. On the 29th, the extreme airtime hill was completed, and construction on the helix began.

The ride finished track construction on April 1, 2022. The ride soft-opened for guests on July 29, 2022 and officially opened to the public on July 30, 2022.

Theme[]

This machine was invented by Dr. Diabolical to create her creatures that will frighten the world. To complete that, she constructed this machine to capture adrenaline and fear of humans. Six Flags also confirmed that Dr. Diabolical is responsible for the monsters at Fright Fest, and that her first name is "Dee."

Experience[]

Queue[]

Guests first pass through the entrance sign and enter the queue. The first section of the queue features a switchback section in shaded areas. Dr. Diabolical will be heard by speakers in that section. After completing this area, guests enter the Diabolical Laboratories building, where the preshow takes place. A cast member will tell guests to wait outside until the show is ready. Inside, guests walk through a hallway with posters and windows so that they can watch the ride from outside. Another cast member will be next to the doors that lead into the preshow room. After the preshow is over, guests head back outside and approach the locker area. These lockers allow guests to put their items on one side and retrieve them on the other side, just like VelociCoaster at Universal's Islands of Adventure. Near the lockers is a chicken exit that guests can escape the queue line before it is too late. Guests then climb up the stairs and board the car in the station.

Layout[]

The car first turns slightly to the left and begins climbing a 150-ft chain lift hill. Once at the top, riders turn 90 degrees to the left. Dr. Diabolical will tell the guests "Give me your fears. My army of creatures need your adrenaline to live. Scream in terror for me." The car then hangs over the edge for five seconds. As soon as Dr. Diabolical says "I mean it! Your fear gives me like!", riders plunge down a 142-ft drop at a 95-degree angle, reaching a max speed of 60 mph. This drop leads straight into an Immelmann, followed by a zero-g roll. Riders hit a block brake and Dr. Diabolical tells the guests "That's not enough! Not nearly enough! Scream! Louder! Scream!" as the car drops 75 feet into a helix. The on-ride camera then takes a photo of the riders. The car then goes over a small hill, passing through another helix. After this, the car hits the final brake run.
