Gotham City is a themed land at Six Flags Over Georgia, based on the fictional city of the same name from DC Comics. It opened on May 1, 1997 alongside Batman: The Ride. It is seen as the most "iconic" area of the park by fans.
The area replaced Jolly Roger's Island, a pirate-themed area that opened as an extension of the U.S.A. section of the park that opened in 1980 and closed at the end of the 1996 season.
At the time of its opening, Gotham City was described as the largest capital expansion in the park's history.[1]
History[]
At the end of the 1996 season, Jolly Roger's Island closed. It began to be demolished in the off-season, in anticipation of a new area.
On May 1, 1997, Gotham City opened as the park's ninth themed land, two days before the public debut of Batman: The Ride, the area's centerpiece. A new counter service restaurant, Gotham City Eatery was added, and Mindbender was reincorporated into the area with a new theme and backstory.
In 2004, Gotham City Crime Wave, a children's swing ride made by Zierer featuring different supervillains from the Batman mythos, was added to the area.
- "We are re-imagining our most iconic area of the park, Gotham City. It's part of our strategic, specific plan to deliver our guests what they say they want."
- ―Dale Kaetzel[src]
In 2015, The Joker Chaos Coaster, a seven-story loop ride, and Harley Quinn Spinsanity, a "Tilt-A-Whirl" ride, were added as part of the first multi-million expansion to the area since its opening. Gotham City Eatery also received a renovation, and a new meet-and-greet area was added.[2]
On August 29, 2019, Six Flags Over Georgia announced that they would be adding a flat ride package in 2020. These rides were Catwoman Whip and Poison Ivy Toxic Spin.[3] The same year the rides were added, Gotham City received a remodel. This included renaming Gotham City Crime Wave to DC Super Villains Swing, Harley Quinn Spinsanity to Harley Quinn Wild Whirl, Gotham City Eatery to Birds of Prey Cafe and Mindbender to The Riddler Mindbender. Batman: The Ride's queue line was reduced as well, eliminating the Gotham City Park scenery.
In 2023, The Joker Chaos Coaster closed for construction of Kid Flash: Cosmic Coaster. The ride opened in November 2023.
