The Great America Scenic Railway is a narrow-gauge heritage railway at Six Flags Great America. It opened with the park in 1976.
History[]
In 1976, when the park opened, the Great America Scenic Railway opened. It has two trains, one red, and one blue. Inside of each shell of the locomotive had a boiler for the effects of steam. There is also a third maintenance engine known as the mule, which is blue. There are two stations for the Scenic railway, one at Hometown Square and one at County Fair. The train traversed around the park, and went through some rides like underneath the corkscrews on Demon. [1] [2]
In 1996, when Southwest Territory opened to the public, a pedestrian walk was added to the railway. [2]
In 2018, the park removed part of track that was around the former Pictorium site to construct Maxx Force. It was planned for it not to return until 2020 after Tsunami Surge would be built. It also did not return, as Tsunami Surge was not built until October of that year. [3]
During the Virtual No Coaster Con 2021, the park said the Great America Scenic Railway could be looking at a "chug back", which confirmed that the train would be coming back in 2021. [4]
By May 2021, train tracks had been re-placed near Maxx Force and Tsunami Surge. On July 1, the ride re-opened to the public, giving a new view of Maxx Force and Tsunami Surge.
