Kings Dominion (abbreviated KD), also known as Kings Dominion & Soak City, is a Six Flags theme park located in Doswell, Virginia. It opened on May 3, 1975 and was conceived by Family Leisure Centers (a partnership of Taft Broadcasting Company and Top Value Enterprises) following the success of Kings Island. The park is divided into five themed sections and also contains the Soak City water park. Kings Dominion has notably gone through several ownership changes since its opening. After original owners Taft Broadcasting sold the park to Kings Entertainment Company (KECO) in 1983, the park was then sold again to the American Financial Company in 1987, while KECO kept operating the park. In 1992, Paramount Communications purchased Kings Island and KECO and in 1993 formed Paramount Parks, with Kings Island being rebranded as Paramount's Kings Dominion. With changes at Paramount, the park switched ownership to Viacom in 1994 and to the CBS Corporation in 2005 until CBS opted to sell Kings Dominion and the entire Paramount Parks division to Cedar Fair in 2006. In 2024, following a merger between Cedar Fair and Six Flags, the park was added to the Six Flags portfolio as part of the newly-formed Six Flags Entertainment Corporation.
