The water park first opened as Soak City U.S.A. on June 17, 2000. As Knott's acquired water parks elsewhere in California that became known as Knott's Soak City Palm Springs and San Diego, the one in Buena Park became known for some time as Knott's Soak City Orange County. As those other water parks were later sold by Cedar Fair, the park's name was shortened to simply "Knott's Soak City".
