Maxx Force is a Formula One themed high-speed launched roller coaster at Six Flags Great America, located in Carousel Plaza which opened on July 4, 2019. The ride holds the record for the fastest launch in North America (78 mph in 1.8 seconds), as well as the fastest inversion (60 mph), and the tallest double inversion (175 feet) in the world. As the third launch coaster in the park's history, Maxx Force is the third tallest coaster at Six Flags Great America, at 175 feet. The tallest is Raging Bull at 200 feet, followed by The Flash: Vertical Velocity at 185 feet.

History[]

In the spring of 2018, the Pictorium, a nearly 40-year-old IMAX theater once touted as the "world's largest motion picture experience", was demolished to make way for a then-unannounced 2019 attraction. The "abrupt" departure of one of Great America's oldest and most historic attractions was seen as unceremonious to some, considering its importance as a pioneer of big-screen theater entertainment.[1]

A few months later on August 2, 2018, Six Flags Great America began releasing episodes of the Road to Glory teaser series on their social media accounts, beginning with Road to Glory - Episode 1. It was followed by three more episodes, with the final episode airing just a few days before Six Flags' attraction announcements for 2019. The series told the story of a racer named Maxx, as he ran through different locations of the park.

On August 30, 2018, Maxx Force was officially announced as part of Six Flags' company-wide 2019 attraction announcements.

On February 8, 2019, Great America held a media event where they showed off Maxx Force's construction. At the event, officials from the park explained some of the ride's features as well as its multiple record-breaking elements.[2]

On July 2 and July 3, 2019, Media Day was held. The day after, July 4, 2019, Maxx Force officially opened to the public.

After the 2019 season, Six Flags worked in conjunction with a village-recommended sound engineer to review the noise level generated by Maxx Force. The launch system was so loud that it could be heard all throughout the park and surrounding areas of Gurnee. To reduce noise complaints, the company made modifications to the launch system, such as the addition of sound barriers.

Construction[]

Soon after Maxx Force was announced, Whizzer was temporarily closed and part of its track removed in order to start work in the former area of The Pictorium. Construction went vertical on January 15, 2019, as shown in a video shown at an American Coaster Enthusiasts event on January 19. Under four months later on May 13, the ride was topped off.

Ride experience[]

After leaving the station, the train pulls forward into the launch area. The train sits in place for a moment, before launching out of the area at a speed of 0 to 78 mph in just 1.8 seconds. It then goes into a "dog tongue" double inversion at 60 mph, and exits while turning to the right. It then goes into a corkscrew, and then up into a "Dive Roll", before returning to the station.

Characteristics[]

"It's faster than any coaster in the park. It's unique. There aren't a lot of coaster like this in the world."

Trains[]

Maxx Force's trains are designed to resemble Formula One racing cars, as the coaster's theme is that of immense speed and acceleration.[2]

Launch system[]

Maxx Force uses an air-based launch system, which is different than that of V2, which uses electromagnetic propulsion. The launch system launches the trains from 0 to 78 mph in just 1.8 seconds, making it the fastest launch of any coaster in North America.[2]
