Pirates of Speelunker Cave is a dark ride that opened at Six Flags Over Texas in 2022. It uses the ride system and building of Yosemite Sam and the Gold River Adventure.
History[]
In July of 2021, a poster that read, "Wanted The Spee-lunker Organist For Piping Up" that used to be an easter egg inside of Yosemite Sam and the Gold River Adventure was moved outside of the ride.
On August 5th, Six Flags Over Texas' 60th anniversary, park president Ron McKenzie announced the ride at a ceremony held in front of the Crazy Horse Saloon.
Closure[]
In August 2022, the ride sustained extensive flood damage, which lead to the closure of the ride after being open to the public for 3 months. In June 2023, the ride reopened with newly added theming elements as well as new technical difficulties. Additionally, the entrance to the queue was moved to the one previously used by Yosemite Sam and the Gold River Adventure, rather than the arched entryway.
Experience[]
The ride plot focuses around pirates on a treasure hunt that are stopped by the Speelunkers, who live in the cave. During the ride you encounter a kraken in the midst of a thunderstorm, mermaids, ancient ruins, pirates, and of course, Speelunkers. During Holiday in the Park in 2023, nearly all figures, from skeletons to Speelunkers, were adorned with Santa hats. Additionally, the fight scene used a stylized version of Carol of the Bells in place of its typical music.
Originally, the ride was promised to feature “state-of-the-art animatronics, cinema style wide-projection technology, physical sets, a redesigned coastal-themed entry plaza that allows guests to see the first descent of the ride, and much more.“ In reality, little exterior theming was built, and the ride doesn’t offer the mentioned view. However, it does offer impressive scenes mixing projections and physical elements as well as animatronics.
