Shazam! is a classic scrambler ride located in the "Shazam Court" area of DC Comics Plaza at Six Flags St. Louis. It is themed after the DC Comics super hero Shazam, and it opened in 1997.
The ride was manufactured by the Eli Bridge Company and originally opened in the U.S.A. section of the park in 1972, where it was known as "Space Scramble".
When the ride was rethemed to Shazam! in 1997, it became the first and only theme park attraction dedicated to Shazam in the world. It is also the most rethemed attraction in Six Flags history.
History[]
Space Scrambler (1972-1980)[]
During the 1972 season, the ride opened in the U.S.A. section of the park as Space Scramble, one of multiple attractions added for Six Flags Over Mid-America's second year.
The Scrambler (1981-1986)[]
For the 1981 season, the ride was renamed "The Scrambler", thought it stayed in the same area.
U.S. Express (1987)[]
For the 1987 season, the ride was renamed again, this time to "U.S. Express". It kept this theme exclusively for that season.
El Toro Bravo (1988-1996)[]
In 1988, the whole ride was moved from the U.S.A. section of the park to the Spain section, and it was rethemed and renamed "El Toro Bravo". It retained this theme until the Spain section's permanent closure at the end of the 1996 season.
Shazam! (1997-present)[]
In 1997, the ride was again rethemed and renamed, this time to the DC Comics super hero "Shazam!" in order to fit with the theme of the new DC Comics Plaza area. Although Mr. Freeze (the centerpiece of the new area) was delayed to a 1998 opening due to issues with the linear induction motors, Shazam! opened on time.
In 2009, the ride was closed for an extended period of time as Shazam! was entirely rebuilt.
In 2018, the cars on the ride were entirely replaced with new, metallic ones, abandoning the previous red cars with "gold lightning bolts" on the sides.
Trivia[]
- The "Shazam!" logo used at the entrance to the ride is very similar to the one used in the original Shazam! comic book run from DC Comics that began in 1973.
