Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Chicago is a 20-acre water park located adjacent to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois. It opened on May 28, 2005.
History[]
Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Chicago opened to the public on May 28, 2005, with attractions such as a bowl slide, lazy river, wave pool, tube slides, and a mat slide racer slide.
On January 15, 2006, Six Flags Great America announced that they would be adding Tornado to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, as the water park's first major addition since its opening the year prior. It opened in the summer of that year.[1]
In June 2011, Hurricane Harbor introduced Riptide Bay, a new 4-acre area that added four new slides and other attractions. The attractions featured were:
- Dive Bomber – A water slide in where the floor drops out from beneath riders.
- Mega Wedgie – Another slide featuring a steep 80-degree drop.
- Wipeout – A double-funnel raft slide.
- Surf Rider – A 5-foot-wave surfing simulator.
- Monsoon Lagoon – A 14,000 square foot activity pool featuring waterfalls and interactive spray elements.
On August 29, 2019, Six Flags Great America announced the addition of Tsunami Surge, the world's tallest and fastest water coaster, to Hurricane Harbor Chicago open originally in 2020, but pushed back to 2021 later.[2]
In the 2021 season, the park became Six Flags' 27th park, the chain's 11th separate-gated water park.[3] On May 29 that year, Tsunami Surge opened to the public.[4]
