Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Oaxtepec or simply Hurricane Harbor Oaxtepec is a Six Flags water park in Oaxtepec, Mexico. It opened on May 30, 2017. The water park that previously existed at the property was originally independently owned, but was acquired by Six Flags in the mid-2010s. Six Flags then redeveloped the park into a brand new Hurricane Harbor water park, the first Six Flags water park outside of the United States.

History

The water park dates back to the 1940s, when the Mexican government built a competition pool with a diving well in the area to host swim meets and train swimming teams. In the 1970s, the 67-acre property was converted into the new Parque Acuático Oaxtepec, a water park that was a tourist destination for the populace of the nearby Mexico City for more than 35 years. Promotora de Centros de Esparcimiento, the Mexico-based company that leased the property from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), ran into economic and legal problems and was forced to permanently close Parque Acuático Oaxtepec after the end of the 2011 season. The property was in turn returned back to the IMSS.

For four years, the IMSS sought other operators for the defunct water park and eventually struck a deal with Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, who of course owned the not-far Six Flags Mexico in Mexico City. Six Flags then contracted Aquatic Development Group and ProSlide to help renovate the park with modern attractions that would rejuvenate the park for its eventual reopening. Some original attractions from Parque Acuático Oaxtepec were kept, which were restored with gelcoat and paint. Several new attractions were introduced and ADG developed a plan seamlessly connect all the new development with the pre-existing portion of the park. Upgrades to the existing portion of the park included an updated filtration system, new holding tanks for chemical treatment, and a reconfiguration of the park's electrical system.

Hurricane Harbor Oaxtepec opened to the public on May 30, 2017. Among the new attractions was Twister, a tornado tube slide, and Big Surf.

On March 14, 2020, in response to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Hurricane Harbor Oaxtepec and Six Flags Mexico jointly announced the temporary suspension of operations for both parks effective March 15 until the end of March, at which point Six Flags would reassess the situation.[1]
