Fright Fest at Six Flags St. Louis is an annual Halloween haunt event that began in 1988, when it was then known as Fright Nights. The event was renamed Fright Fest in 1993.
Event history[]
1988-1992 Fright Nights I-V[]

A 1988 newspaper advertisement in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for the all-new Fright Nights.
After the success of Fright Nights at AstroWorld and Six Flags Over Georgia in the mid-1980s, Six Flags continued expanding the event to its other properties. The third park to introduce Fright Nights would be Six Flags Over Mid-America, then one of the company's top profitable parks. Like in Georgia, the debut year of Fright Nights would feature the horror icon Freddy Krueger from the A Nightmare on Elm Street series as the "entertainment chairman" of the event, as a way to pique interest in the new Halloween event for fans of the franchise. The initial year of Fright Nights featured The House of the Living Dead, a haunted attraction that was housed in the building for the Time Tunnel. Also new for the Halloween season was a new lighting package for Colossus that made it into an 18-story Jack-o-lantern. Fright Nights was only open for two weekends beginning on October 22, for a total of five days of operation. On Fridays and Saturdays it was open from 10 A.M. to midnight, and on Sundays 10 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. On one Friday, October 28, the park was open from 6 P.M. to midnight. To say the event was a success would be an understatement, with crowds for the first night tripling expectations and causing a traffic snarl on Interstate 44. According to park spokeswoman Laurie Odum, "We were anticipating about 10,000 people, and we got more than 30,000."[1]
For Fright Nights II in 1989, Six Flags expanded the massively successful event with an all-new haunted house, Freddy's Nightmares: The Haunted House on Elm Street, and an all-new show in the Palace Theater, Dr. Blood's Mystery Theater. The Terror Train and The House of the Living Dead also returned from the previous year. The event featured two new street shows for added streetmosphere, Freddy's Halloween Execution and the Witch Burnings.
Fright Nights III in 1990 dropped Freddy Krueger, and his haunted house was replaced by the Burrows Mansion. The Terror Train and The House of the Living Dead returned for their third seasons, and new entertainment offerings included a show featuring Dr. Frite in the Palace Theater, the Monster Mash Bash in the Tremors Dance Pavilion, and two street shows, the Krypt Kickers 5 band and an execution by guillotine.
Fright Nights IV in 1991 featured the enhanced Terror Train, with a new, explosive finale. The Burrows Mansion returned for its second season, and The House of the Living Dead for its fourth and final season. For entertainment, the Monster Mash Bash returned, as well as various street shows and kids entertainment. This season was notable as the first when the park was under partial ownership of Time Warner.
Fright Nights V in 1992 featured the addition of the Halls of Horror on Macabre Hill, replacing the Burrows Mansion. The Terror Train returned, and for entertainment the event featured Blackmore and Gold's Magical Illusion Show in the Palace Theater and the return of Monster Mash Bash at the Tremors Dance Pavilion. It was the last year of the event's identity as Fright Nights, as the event would be essentially relaunched the following season with Six Flags' new ownership by Time Warner.
1993-present: Fright Fest[]
In 1993, Fright Nights continued under an all-new name, Fright Fest. The change was made by Time Warner, who was working to improve branding within the parks and wanted all of the Six Flags parks' Halloween events to share the same name. The first year of the new Fright Fest was hosted by Dr. Blood, who served in a similar role as Freddy Krueger did during Fright Nights I and II. The featured haunted attraction was the all-new Arania's Rooms of Doom, which replaced the Halls of Horror on Macabre Hill. This haunted attraction was given a storyline where each of the rooms were one of the 13 unlucky husbands of Arania, all of which died in different, gruesome ways. Entertainment featured the blockbuster Love at First Fright, a musical that had begun at Six Flags Great America the previous year. Each of Six Flags Over Mid-America's themed sections; 1904 World's Fair, France, Gateway to the West, Great Britain, Illinois, U.S.A., and Spain, all contained zombie couples that reflected the the theme of their respective area.
