Superman: Tower of Power was a drop tower ride at Six Flags St. Louis, located in the Illinois section of the park. The ride was named after Superman from DC Comics. It opened to the public on May 19, 2006. It officially closed in 2020 and was later replaced by Catwoman Whip on May 27, 2022.
History[]
After the closure of Six Flags AstroWorld on October 30, 2005, the park's Dungeon Drop, a medieval-themed drop tower attraction manufactured by Intamin, was dismantled and relocated to Six Flags St. Louis, where it would be the featured new attraction for the 2006 season. The original name of the ride's new life in St. Louis was to be Acrophobia, and it would be placed in the Illinois section of the park in front of the Screamin' Eagle.
Construction of the ride was finished on January 26, 2006, and construction crews installed six American flags at the top of the tower, representing Six Flags and marking that the ride had been topped off. However, the plans to name the ride Acrophobia were cancelled. Following a visit by Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro in early 2006, Shapiro ordered that the ride take on an entirely new name and theme, becoming Superman: Tower of Power instead. This was part of an effort by Shapiro, who had just acquired the position of CEO in mid-December 2005, to increase the presence of the Justice League and DC Comics characters in the parks.
Superman: Tower of Power was officially announced on February 15, 2006, alongside Bugs Bunny National Park. The two new attractions marked the "largest addition in the park's history", just in time for the 45th anniversary of Six Flags.
The ride's opening ceremony took place at 10:30 AM on May 19, 2006. The opening ceremony was presented by General Manager Dave Roemer, and was also attended by Mayor Billy McDaniel of Metropolis, Illinois, Miss Metropolis 2006 and the Metropolis High School Band. In the ceremony, Mayor McDaniel gave Six Flags St. Louis a plaque from the city of Metropolis, and a key to the tower. After this, both Roemer and Mayor McDaniel cut the yellow ribbon in front of the ride, officially opening it to the public around 11:00 AM.
In late June 2007, Six Flags St. Louis' Superman: Tower of Power was temporarily shut down after an incident occurred at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom with their version of the ride where a 13-year-old girl had both of her feet severed when cables snapped while riding. The Kentucky Kingdom version of the ride was removed but the St. Louis version reopened and continued operating.[1]
Removal[]
In early 2021, rumors began circulating among fans of the park and insiders that Superman: Tower of Power would be removed from the park. In March, Superman was removed from the ride lineup on the park's website altogether, and when Six Flags St. Louis opened for the 2021 season on March 20, Catwoman Whip could be seen on the map in the place of the former attraction.
Superman: Tower of Power was demolished completely in September 2021.
