In 1999, Six Flags introduced a bunch of new rides' to the park for the season, one being the children's ride Taz's tornado. This ride is designed for kids who may not be able to go on larger swing rides. Taz's tornado was placed in Looney Tunes Seaport that was created in 1999 as well.
Created by Zamperla, Taz's Tornado was added to Six Flags Great Adventure is one of more than 25 new rides for the 1999 season. Once this attraction was added to the park Taz Tornado became one of the most popular attractions in the new Looney Tunes Seaport area for younger children coming to the park. The Taz Tornado was a Zamperla swing type ride designed for children to ride with their parents. It was the park's third swing ride, the other two swing rides being the Flying Wave and the Mini Swing.
The original ride was to be placed near Granny's as a candy themed generic Lolly Swing ride.
The ride design[]
Instead, the swings were designed to look like the Tazmanian Devil who is a perfect fit for a spinning ride. The middle of the ride was designed to resemble the tornado like cloud of dust that always was seen by Taz's movements.
Ever since the the Flying Wave was removed in 2007, following the Mini Swings removal at the end of 2010, the Taz Tornado was left to be the only swing ride in the park.
Zamperla made Taz's Tornado no ordinary clockwise swing design. With it's 16 units with 2 seats per unit, each cycle can hold up to 32 people her guests (16 adults with 16 children). Each cycle can do 800 guests per cycle if the ride were filled. The maximum revolving speed is 9.5 rpm. The rides restraints involve safety bars and crotch straps however, riders can't ride under 36".
