Thunder River is a white water rapids ride at Six Flags St. Louis, located in the Gateway to the West section of the park. The ride opened in April 1983, replacing the former Mississippi Adventure river ride.
The ride is themed after the Gasconade River in Missouri, which in real life begins in the Ozarks and connects with the Missouri River.
History[]
In 1979, Six Flags and Intamin AG partnered to create the world's first white water rapids ride for AstroWorld, Thunder River. The ride was an all-new concept, and it proved so popular with guests upon its opening in summer 1980 that Six Flags partnered with Intamin again to bring similar river rapids rides to the rest of its parks throughout the early to mid 1980s.
A year later in 1981, the first of these "clones" came in the form of Roaring Rapids at Six Flags Magic Mountain. As the second ever Intamin river rapids ride, it also became the first on the west coast.
The third Intamin river rapids ride was chosen for Six Flags Over Mid-America, opening in time for the park's 1983 summer season. While Magic Mountain's Roaring Rapids was given a different name and theme, Six Flags Over Mid-America's version of the ride was given the Thunder River name like the original at AssroWorld. Thunder River opened to the public in April 1983.
