Themed after Top Fuel drag racing, the coaster was originally designed by Intamin and opened on May 4, 2003 as Top Thrill Dragster. At the time of its opening, it was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world, as well as the world's first strata coaster. After a visitor was seriously injured in the ride queue in August 2021, the ride was closed.[1]
Redesign[]
In 2023, Zamperla began modification of the coaster with a new ride experience. A media event was held on April 25, 2024 in which the revised ride, now known as "Top Thrill 2" was soft-opened. It was opened to the general public on the following May 4th, marking the 21st anniversary of the ride's original opening. However, 8 days later on May 12th, the ride was once again closed indefinitely so that the ride vehicles could undergo further modification.[2]
